How To Reduce Digital Fatigue

How To Reduce Digital Fatigue
Hours spent in front of screens and devices is inevitable when we’re all working from home, but its detrimental impact is felt in various ways from the health of our eyes to our skin and posture.

With hours spent in front of screens in an attempt to carry on as usual and stay connected to the outside word, it’s no wonder many of us are suffering from digital burnout. Too much time spent in front of digital devices can have a detrimental not just on our levels of exhaustion, but on our eyes, overall health, quality of sleep and our skin.

Staring at a screen for the majority of the day can have serious consequences for the health of our eyes, which can result in strained vision, dryness, blurring and increased headaches. Poor posture from sitting awkwardly at desks or makeshift workstations can also cause neck and shoulder pain.

Too much screen time can have a serious impact on the quality of sleep, which we know to be absolutely essential for maintaining optimal health and wellbeing. The average person doesn’t prioritise sleep as it is, but spending too much time in front of devices in the hours before bed can impact our sleep health, leading to a suppression of the sleep hormone melatonin, a disruption of our circadian rhythms, a reduction in important REM sleep and compromised alertness the next morning. All of this can add up to a recipe for disaster with consequences including a lack of productivity and focus, irritability, a compromised immune system and even an increase in the risk of heart disease and diabetes.

The negative effect of too much time spent on devices on the skin comes down to the high exposure to blue light, or HEV (high energy visible) light, which is emitted from the screens. These damaging rays penetrate deeper into the skin structure than UVA rays, right to the dermis where our collagen and elastin, integral components of healthy skin, are made. In short, too much blue light causes slow but serious degradation of our skin’s structure, leading to more fine lines and wrinkles, a loss of firmness and increased pigmentation.
